Below are some responses to many of the
Frequently Asked Questions that arise from
year to year.
What is travel soccer and how does it differ from rec soccer? Travel teams have tryouts; sometimes not everyone ‘trying out’ makes the team. Therefore travel teams tend to be more competitive. Coaches are trained and certified. Specific soccer skills and positional play are taught and expectations for learning them are higher than rec. Teams train and play together for a whole year, further developing friendships, team chemistry and expectations.
How far and how often do teams “travel”? It will depend on which teams end up in your division. But typical travel games are in Grand Blanc, Rochester, Sterling Heights, Birmingham, Madison Heights, Farmington Hills, Troy and Romeo. Most teams will travel 4-6 games outside of Lapeer each season (fall and spring). All home games and practices are in Lapeer.
What league does the club play in? LLSC plays in the Michigan Youth Soccer League or more commonly known as ‘MYSL’. Check out their website at http://michigansoccer.com/
How much are the fees? Fees depend on age. Base prices are as follows: U8-10: $350/kid, U11-U12: $400/kid, U13: $450/kid, U14: $500/kid, U16 $200/kid (one season only). Additionally, you have to purchase a uniform for approximately $90. There are no other fees you will have to pay. We offer payment plans and family discounts (see below).
What if I have multiple kids in the club, is there a discount? Yes.
Starting this year (2014-2015) the discount is as follows:
First kid = (full cost)
Second kid = (full cost - $25)
Third kid = (full cost - $25)
Fourth kid = (full cost - $50)
**Anyone paid in full before August 1st gets a 10% discount!**
Can my child get extra or specialized training? Yes, for additional fees there is additional training provided by a qualified trainer. Typically, those small group sessions are $50 for 6 – one hour training sessions. Winter time training fees tend to be more, in order to pay for the training facility.
What about playing indoor soccer? You may opt to play indoor soccer if you choose. It is not required. Some kids want/need the time off to do other things, while some kids want to play. Indoor costs are extra and depend upon the facility. If we do not have enough to form a team, you can play with other teams or sign up for the “house team”.
Who oversees the training? Chad Kenny will oversee the training for all the players.
Is goalie training available? Yes, we will provide goalie training for anyone interested.
What is a tournament? A tournament is an opportunity to travel someplace and play multiple teams during a weekend. They are competitive and typically award medals or trophies for winners. Your club fee includes one tournament. If your team and coach want to do additional tournaments, you can for an additional fee.
What extra fees will there be? None, unless you decide to participate additional skills training or goalie training, purchase extra club gear, or play indoor or in additional tournaments. None of which is required.
What do the fees cover? Your fee pays to cover: league fees, field fees, tournament costs, ref fees, ref assigner fees, club fees, coaching fees, one tournament, coaching education.
When does the season start and end? Fall season starts in mid August and end around 1st week of November. Spring season starts the end of March and ends the 1st week of June. During winter time, nothing is mandatory unless you decide to do additional training and/or indoor. We encourage your child to do other activities.
How much do teams practice? Teams average 3 events a week. Typically it starts with 2-3 practices a week, then once games start there will be 2 practices a week and one or two games a week.
If I have a problem with the coach, what do I do? Please start with speaking to your coach. We ask that you observe the “24 hour rule”. Meaning that if you are upset with your coach, wait 24 hours before contacting. Confrontations right after games typically do not go well for anyone.
What if that doesn't resolve the issue? Contact the club president.
If I have a question about the club structure, who do I call? Contact the club president.
What are my responsibilities as a parent? We will provide a detailed “parents expectation sheet.” But, generally we ask that you get your child to practice and games early. We also encourage you to always have two positive things to say after each game (let the coach deal with areas of improvement). Always cheer positively, without coaching from the sidelines or complaining about refs or other teams. Finally, we ask that you please pay your club fees in a timely fashion.
Will my child get to play different positions? Generally the younger the player, the more different positions he/she will play. We like giving players the opportunity to play multiple positions as we believe it fosters growth and better understanding of the game. Typically, as the player matures, he/she settles into one or two positions that fit best.
Are indoor fees and extra training included in costs advertised? These extras are not included. Neither are required, you can choose not to participate. Not every child wants the “extra” things. We offer it for those that want it.
What about other people that keep trying to get me to join another team/club? LLSC realizes that we are not the only option for travel soccer. You are encouraged to explore your options and research other clubs. There are some other good ones out there besides LLSC. Please do your homework and ask at least the following questions:
· Who will coach my kid?
· What certifications does the coach have?
· Can I speak to a parent who had a child play for that coach last season?
· What do the fees include?
· Do they allow players to do other activities during wintertime?
· What league do they play in?
· Can my young child get training from some of the successful local
high school coaches and players?
· How long has the club existed?
The answers to these questions will help you find the best fit for your child. If you feel your child would benefit from playing in the LLSC, we look forward to seeing your child at tryouts.
